The town of Smolyan is picturesquely scattered in the narrow gorge of the Cherna River in the most beautiful part of the Rodope Mountains. This is in our opinion one of the most beautiful Bulgarian towns. The new, modern centre of the town is a skilful blend of local traditions and existing environment. 16 km to the north, up above the town is one of the biggest Bulgarian winter resorts – Pamporovo. 10 km west is the region of Smolyan Lakes, known as the “emerald eyes of the Rodope Mountain”. The Smolyan Waterfall – on Kriva (Curved) is 20 meters high and is just to the south-west of the town. 10 km north of the town is located the extremely interesting village of Momchilovtsi. Smoylan has much to offer…. its authentic Rodope architecture, the local historic-ethnographic museum, traditional craftsmanship, its pleasant climate in all seasons, delicious local cuisine and fantastic nature. A number of family hotels and other appealing features turn the town into a year round international tourist trap.
