The city of Plovdiv (340 638 inhabitants, 160 m above sea level) is situated in the western part of the Gornotrakiiska (Upper Thracian) Lowland along the two banks of the Maritsa, the largest river, springing out in Bulgaria and scattered upon six unique syenite hills. Today Plovdiv is a very beautiful city coming from the past and striving towards its future. The hills of Plovdiv are noticeable from quite a distance because this is an area of a vast flat plain and all of a sudden hills pop up! It’s quite spooky! The six hills, as well as the old town of Plovdiv bring specific color and atmosphere to the town and shape up its unique view and nature. The Maritsa River splits the city into two parts connected by six bridges which act as the center-piece of the city. The first ever Bulgarian exhibition was organized here back in 1892, which later turned into the International Plovdiv Fair. Currently the fair is conducted bi-annually – at the beginning of May the fair is dedicated to consumer goods and commodities, white the fair organized in September focuses on industrial goods.
