
Gabrovo is landed at the northern foot of the Central Balkan Mountain. It is situated in the immediate proximity of the geographical center of Bulgaria and in itself is a world known as a center of humor and jokes. The most significant landmark is the unique in South Europe open-air museum – the architectural ethnographic complex “Etura”. It is situated 8 km from the city center on an area of 60 000 sq.m. The complex lives its own authentic life of a typical craftsmanship settlement from the period of Bulgarian Revival. One can hear the rattle of wheels and mills, moved by water, the whiz of the mills for woolen cloths and for flour. Metal ornaments, pottery articles, copper utensils, braids, hot buns and whatever else come out from the skilful hands of the masters there. The little cobblestone streets, the house with the tavern, the clock tower and a lot of other authentic details complete the whole picture. The surrounding areas of the town are alsoremarkable. One can admire the panoramic view to the town and have a look at the ruins of the old fortress walls in the Gradishte Area – 3 km away from Gabrovo. The Liuliatsite Resort is situated at the distance of 15 km west of Gabrovo whose name is related to the abundance of lilac within the region. The climate is favorable for treatment of pulmonary diseases. A marked hiking track starts from here in the direction of the central ridge of Central Balkan Mountain. Uzana Mountain Resort is situated 22 km southwest of the town. There one can find institutional holiday houses, several hotels, 3 chalets, a ski-lift and catering establishments. The historical Shipka Pass is 21 km away and the Monument of Freedom is above it.
